Human beings can hear sound vibrations that reach the ear through the air, a process known as “air conduction”, or through what is known as “bone conduction”.
This is because sounds can also be transmitted through solid bodies, such as the skeletal system and the entire human body, allowing for more general “body resonance”.

Due to this phenomenon, if our body is exposed to sound stimuli of adequate intensity and frequency, these are amplified by the body cavities, which act as a sound box, and then transmitted through the skeletal structure to the areas of the brain that perceive them as sounds.

When we listen to our own recorded voice, it sounds different from what we are used to hearing live. This happens because, when we speak, we hear our voice mainly through bone conduction, while when we listen to a recording of it, we perceive it primarily through air conduction.

Bone conduction allows us to hear external sounds of sufficient intensity and frequency, even if our ears are covered with our hands or protected by noise-cancelling headphones and it also helps us to hear sounds when we immerse our head in water or place our ear on a railway track where a train is travelling in the distance.

For this reason, when Beethoven became deaf, he listened to his own compositions by placing his head on the soundboard of his piano.

In the 1980s and 1990s, before the advent of the Internet, several researchers began working independently on the use of vibroacoustic to improve human well-being.

In the 1990s, there was a fruitful exchange of telephone contacts between Tony Wigram, the leading academic researcher in England on vibroacoustic, and Marco Sammarco of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, the first Italian researcher to work in this field, who had finished building his first vibroacoustic bed in 1993.

In 1999, representing the Chair of Anatomical and Physiological Foundations of Psychic Activity, Sammarco was invited as a speaker at the “3rd International Congress of Studies on Borderline Experiences” in Republic of San Marino, to present, among other things, his vibroacoustic bed.

Other speakers included Alessandro Meluzzi, renowned Professor of Psychoneuroimmunology at the University of Turin, who tried out the vibroacoustic bed and said:

“The transmission of sounds throughout the body is exciting. A coenaesthesis sensation. This somatic perception facilitates listening and the very evocation of the music. It is a direct passage to the emotional state, to the limbic system.”

At the same venue, Giuseppe Spinetti, President of the International Institute of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, tried the vibroacoustic bed and commented:

“What a pleasant experience! The combination of music and vibrations is pleasant. It’s a much stronger experience than simply listening to music or guided relaxation.”

Currently, “INTONA” is the latest version of dr. Sammarco’s vibroacoustic massage bed, created with ITALIA LIVING in 2025/2026.

Also in memory of the colleague relationship with Wigram, INTONA is being presented worldwide for the first time in Birmingham, England.

INTONA is an ergonomic chaise longue that promotes “immersive” music listening.

Using music and sounds of appropriate intensity and frequency, INTONA can modulate the emotional sphere and personal arousal according to the listener’s musical taste and desires.

INTONA is an augmented wellbeing instrument, created using techniques and technologies that make it a beautiful piece of Italian-style furniture, capable of providing a vibroacoustic massage that can be modulated according to the listener’s tastes and needs, which can also be used simply as a good quality music source when needed.

N.B.: Anyone in normal health can fully enjoy vibroacoustic massage from the age of three. Pregnant women are advised to wait until after the third month and to set the vibration effect to a minimum.

Vibroacoustic massage should be avoided in the following cases: pacemakers; risk of thrombosis; decompensated heart failure; myocardial infarction; uncontrolled hypertension; kidney, bladder or gallbladder stones; angina pectoris; recent vertebral prolapse; multiple trauma; acute inflammatory conditions; recent surgery; open wounds and active bleeding (excluding menstruation); gastrointestinal ulcers; severe headaches; epilepsy and severe neurological and psychiatric conditions; presence of implants.
